You need me in your life if you ever go to the far north east highlands . I am a fan of Debora’s substack and on Wednesdays she publishes her farmers market haul ,which is as lovely as you would expect. I sometimes reply with my market haul from Dornoch (local mutton, local salmon, Dutch cheese from a genuine Dutchman in Cromarty , local raspberries and potatoes, venison, game pie and very good chocolate indeed from a woman who left South America to produce artisan chocolate and patisserie in the middle of nowhere, who must have an amazing life story) And I am very proud of the fine Dornoch market as when I was a child in the eighties we would be lucky to find a yellowing cabbage , but I suspect southern French markets were always gorgeous.
Love this weeks post Gilly, it’s clear that having that niche wins hands down. We went on a road trip to France a few years ago, drove an entire circle around. Our favourite place was Beziers, a place that seemingly came up with the Michelin goods multiple times over. I’d be interested to hear Carolyn’s take on the place. In the meantime, Im grabbing myself a copy of Carolyn’s book and getting stuck in.
I love this most under-estimated part of France that I have visited often. In fact I wrote a piece last year which seems to be very similar to your Amuse-Bouche route https://francetoday.com/food-drink/eat-your-way-down-the-coast-from-calais-to-montreuil-sur-mer/. Merlimont Sur Mer was in its first week when we went and absolute rocking already then. We loved it. I'm enjoying Carolyn's book too and will be taking a copy when I visit friends in Languedoc nr Beziers. Haven't had a mo to read those entries yet. Enjoy the rest of your trip x
Oh Gilly, thank you so much! 🙏
Thank YOU! We had a ball!
What a lovely piece! And as a fellow electric crosser of continents (well one) this sounds like required reading..
It is indeed!
Oh wow Gilly thank you for this I'm actually going to Montreuil-sur-Mer in a couple of weeks! Top tips I'm ordering this book right now x

Wow! I hope you’re writing the book! And look out for @queenofmarkets on Substack. Bet she’ll want to chat to you!

If you go to France regularly and love food, it's a must. Beziers is near where Debora Robertson relocated. Stunning! I'll join you there!
Ah I can see why, it’s a gorgeous place to relocate to. When shall we go?…
Well, unsurprisingly we have a plan…
Of course you do, I wouldn’t expect anything less!
😉
Great post, Gilly! Hands-on is the only way to go....
It is! Thank you xx
